Message From The Commodore

FIRST
DAY
OF SPRING AND 70° @ THE
CARRIAGE HOUSE
March 20th was special this
year. It was such a beautiful day that we opened all the doors and
windows and let the warm breezes wander through for the whole event.
It was one of the few times the weather gods gave us a break this
season.
Everyone was in good spirits despite
another extremely short season at Bantam Lake.
(The official Fleet Captain’s report will be covered in the Fall
newsletter). We had 3 days of sailing on the lake; 2 of which were
without wind sufficient to create any real excitement. But, as
always, lots of good food, drink and tall tales were in order.
The raffle ticket drawing was good fun
again. Following the drawing we got down to the serious
business of the 2009 CIYC Awards Presentations.
There was no Diver’s Award again this
year but Bryan Wadey was awarded the newly created (and soon to be
patented) CIYC Iceboat Tuning Device (ITD). Unfortunately
Bryan’s boat
experienced “a stress concentration relieving itself” on the one day
of decent sailing at Bantam. The ITD will allow him to make
adjustments when setting up his Gambit next season to prevent this
from happening again. Bryan couldn’t make the meeting but will
receive the ITD at work; George Neyssen doing the honors.
Another special award was given to Fleet
Captain Tony Bosco for his “New Look” this season. You’ll want to
break into a chorus of “America The Beautiful” as he sails past you!
What a paint job! See attached photos.
The Commodore’s Trophy was given to Mike
Seele. Mike was not in attendance but again George has promised to
make the official presentation of Art Hooten Sr.’s painting. Mike
has been a member of CIYC since 1993.
The Milton A. Bristol Memorial Trophy was
not awarded this year due to lack of activity at Bantam but, last
year’s recipient and our gracious host again this year at Lake
Mahopac, Bob Strohm has promised to care for it again until next
season’s meeting.
Fred Clarke received the Art Hooten
Skeeter Trophy for his dedicated efforts on a number of boats over
the past year; his own RED FOX
II included. Fred, a “two-timer”, having received the trophy
previously in 1998, is well known for his craftsmanship. And, if
you’re in the neighborhood, pay a visit to The CIYC-Clarke Museum
and Basement Boatyard; it’s a living archive of CIYC history.
Last, but not least, your dedicated Board
of Governors was unanimously elected (unopposed, but kicking and
screaming) to another term so you’ll have to suffer along. Our first
order of business will be to figure out how to guarantee a long
season of hard, smooth and thick ice starting in early December,
2010 and lasting until the end of March, 2011 with little or no
snow. (If anyone has any clues on how to make this happen, kindly
send us a note. It might be best to send it anonymously unless you
want to end up getting voted into office).
Look for the next update sometime prior
to the 2nd Annual Swap Meet in November.
Have a great summer.
